One Museum, 100 Years
Murney Tower Museum is the oldest operating museum in Kingston, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025. To celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event with our community, we have developed a Centennial Initiative, which includes special educational and cultural projects and events that will boost interest in Kingston’s history and increase access to Kingston’s arts and culture.
Our Goals for Centennial
Our Centennial Projects include:
An Illustrated Children’s Book
The museum will collaborate with a children’s book author and illustrator to develop a children’s book about Murney Tower. The book will combine historical information with fiction, thereby boosting children’s interest and imagination. The museum aims to 500 print copies and distribute them to local schools, and arts and culture organizations for free.
Storytelling/Drama Workshops
In parallel to the children’s book, we will develop a special storytelling/drama workshop in partnership with local, non-profit performance arts organization, Blue Canoe Productions, which offers opportunities for youth to gain experience in performance arts. These workshops will take place in Murney Tower and public parks in 2025 and immerse children in the story. All sessions will be offered for free.
Illustration Workshops for Children
The museum will collaborate with Kingston Public Library to organize free children’s watercolour sessions in 2025. These workshops will be offered free of charge.
Centennial Exhibition: Echoes of Time: Reimagining Murney Tower
We will collaborate with Modern Fuel Artist-run Centre to develop a collaborative juried exhibition, which will delve into the history of Murney Tower, while also envisioning its contemporary significance and future possibilities. Kingston-based artists will be encouraged to explore themes of heritage, memory, transformation, and the intersection of past and present through diverse mediums and perspectives. The exhibition will be displayed in Murney Tower and Modern Fuel in 2025.
Sponsorship
We are looking for organizations, businesses, and individuals to provide support to our Centennial Initiative and make this dream happen.
Sponsorship is needed in the form of funds, volunteers, and leadership for the development and implementation of special events, projects, and activities designed to celebrate the museum’s 100th anniversary and increase access to local history, arts and heritage.
